What is Vishing? Exposing Scams and Voice Phishing Methods

Vishing (Voice Phishing) is a type of fraud in which attackers use phone calls and voice messages to force a person to give them confidential bank card information or make a money transfer to their checking account. Scammers usually pretend to be bank employees, law enforcement and government officials, or technical support staff of the software provider.

DecisionTelecom will help you to notify your customers about the threat of vishing. Our specialists will set up SMS messaging to your database of phone numbers, providing subscribers with information on how to quickly recognize and respond to fraud.

Popular Vishing Schemes

Fraud can be exposed by such features: a call from an unrecognized number, a request for confidential data, or a demand for urgent actions from the victim.

The most frequent deceptive schemes:

  1. Calls "from the bank". Fraudsters introduce themselves as operators of a bank and inform the customer that his card is blocked due to an attempt to crack the password. They promise to activate the card after the person provides the CVV code.
  2. Fraud with lottery winnings, and grants. They tell the victim in the telephone mode that she was lucky enough to win a certain amount. But to receive the reward, you have to pay a mandatory fee, or tax or simply provide your bank card details along with your CVV code.
  3. Calls "from utility companies". The attacker calls the customer and, introducing himself as an employee of the housing and utilities department or other service company, demands urgent payment for this or that service. Otherwise, it will be disconnected within a few hours.
  4. Manipulation of debts. A person receives a voice message that he has an unpaid fine or tax for a certain amount. To avoid legal proceedings, he is offered to pay off the debt within a few hours.

Voice phishing can also be recognized by the quality of telephone communication. As a rule, the sound of the attackers is poor, there are background noises. All this doesn't match the professional settings used by official companies.
